From March 4-8, 2025, the West Jamaica Conference Auditorium became the epicentre of an influential gathering, as over 113 Literature Evangelists (L.E.s) from across Jamaica converged for the annual Jamaica Union Conference (JAMU) Literature Evangelist Field School and Convention.
The event, themed "Transforming Lives One Page at a Time," marked a momentous celebration of 175 years of the Publishing Ministry — a ministry that has not only shaped lives but continues to spread the transformative message of the Gospel through the written word.
The opening evening was ignited by an inspiring devotional led by Pastor Levi Johnson, Executive Secretary of the Jamaica Union. Reflecting on Isaiah 55:10-11, Pastor Johnson underscored the mighty power of the printed word, sharing a deeply personal story. He recalled how a simple tract handed to his father by a colporteur — despite his parents’ inability to read — ignited a spiritual awakening that led his entire family to embrace the Adventist message. "Even though my parents couldn’t read, the Holy Spirit worked through the printed page," he recalled, reminding attendees of the immense power literature has in transforming hearts and lives.

The passion for literature evangelism was evident in every corner of the event, with Dr. Dudley Hosin, Director of Publishing Ministries for JAMU, echoing words of encouragement to the colporteurs. Dr. Hosin, a firm and passionate believer in the Publishing Ministry, reiterated to the colporteurs the mantra that "With Christ, you are champions." During the Friday evening vespers, he shared life-altering testimonies that highlighted how God's Word, delivered through books and tracts, has helped individuals overcome addiction, mend broken lives, and cultivate steadfast faith.
Pastor Stephen Apola, Assistant Director of Publishing Ministries at the General Conference, served as the principal speaker for the convention. His thorough exploration of the history and significance of the Colporteur ministry left a lasting impact. The term "colporteur," he explained, is derived from the French word meaning "one who carries books around the neck," highlighting the power of the printed word as a tool for change. Pastor Apola spoke about the simplicity and strength of the ministry, providing attendees with strategies to address objections, utilize marketing tools, and leverage social media to enhance the ministry's influence.

Each day featured impactful devotional insights delivered by various leaders. Pastor Adali Blythe, the Treasurer of JAMU, emphasised the importance of trusting in God's unchanging promises. Meanwhile, Pastor Sadekie Beckford, the Publishing Director for the East Jamaica Conference, reminded attendees that every mission begins with prayer, encouraging them to align their hearts with God's will. Pastor Adrian Cottrell, serving as the Personal Ministries and Sabbath School Director of JAMU, shared vital insights related to ministry, while Pastor Michael McCallum enlightened the Colporteur Ministries with the analogy of the fig tree root, 'let no one deter you.'
Sister Clara Spengler, Bookstore Director for IADPA, and Sister Debbie McLean, Regional Manager for IADPA Jamaica, unveiled new initiatives aimed at enhancing the L.E. experience, including a new challenge designed to motivate and reward the evangelists for their hard work. One of the most poignant moments of the event occurred when seasoned colporteurs shared their personal testimonies. Brother Ceston Hamilton, who has been in the ministry for over 40 years, recounted how a missionary’s example inspired him as a young boy. Despite facing numerous challenges, Brother Hamilton’s dedication has resulted in over 100 souls coming to Christ. His story exemplified the lasting impact of the ministry, where a single act of kindness can transform countless lives.
For the new recruits, the event provided a hands-on experience in street canvassing in Montego Bay. One inspiring story emerged when a recruit, eager to serve, arrived only in his socks because his shoes were too tight. In a lovely act of camaraderie, a fellow literature evangelist gifted him a pair of slippers—a gesture that embodied the spirit of unity and generosity among the colporteurs.
The closing Sabbath service at Kings SDA Church was a poignant reminder of the unwavering dedication of the literature evangelists. Pastor Stephen Apola delivered a powerful message during the Divine hour. Pastor Everett Smith, Director of Publishing Ministries for the Central Jamaica Conference, presented the charge for the afternoon segment of the programme, highlighting how God's transformative power is evident in their lives and work. His charge culminated in a heartfelt consecration prayer, seeking divine empowerment as the Colporteurs continued their mission to spread the Gospel.

The event highlighted not only the outstanding achievements of these individuals but also the significant impact of literature evangelism in transforming lives and uplifting communities across the island of Jamaica. JAMU also seized the opportunity to acknowledge the devoted efforts of conference directors and administrative teams, who have been crucial to the success of this mission.
As the event concluded, it was clear that literature evangelism remains highly relevant and impactful today. The commitment of literature evangelists, along with the support of their directors and the wider church community, ensures that the Publishing Ministry will continue to transform lives.
Pastor Levi Johnson's profound statement encapsulates this sentiment: "The word shall prosper, and the ministry to which God has called us shall prosper." Indeed, 175 years later, the endeavour of literature evangelism continues to hold its relevance and impact, transforming lives one page at a time.
